Federal minimum wage raised to $6.55 per hour, effective July 24

The U.S. Department of Labor announced that the federal minimum wage for covered, nonexempt employees is $6.55 per hour, effective July 24, 2008.

This change will not affect most Missouri employers because the state minimum wage per hour is $6.65, and federal law states that employees subject to state and federal minimum wage laws are entitled to the higher of the two.

The new federal minimum wage represents a 70-cent increase over the previous minimum wage of $5.85 per hour. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires annual increases in July 2007, 2008 and 2009, so the federal minimum wage will rise again in July 2009 to $7.25 per hour.
